Bliss 101 Team: Kerri Jones

Self-taught jewelry designer, Kerri Jones, grew up in Del Mar. As a teenager, days were spent at the beach dreaming of fashion. A career in the industry resulted from these beachside daydreams, and Kerri built her career working as a fashion retail merchandiser, photo stylist and manager for over 10 years. Kerri eventually decided to stay home to start a family, but it wasn’t long (and only natural) before fashion and business started to work their way back into her life. At the time that her children began attending elementary school, TenThings Jewelry was born.  A collection of handmade, bohemian jewelry and clothing inspired by the Southern California coastal lifestyle, TenThings Jewelry is now proudly sold at boutiques from coast to coast, including Bliss 101 in Encinitas.

As a wife and mother of two teenagers and and an assortment animals, Kerri still spends weekends at the beach, and her blissful days continue to be spent dreaming of fashion, practicing yoga, eating vegetarian burritos and creating pretty things.

Reclaimed, Repurposed furniture designer Thomas Bina at Bliss 101

Thoughtfully designed and consciously created, Bina will change the way you think about home furnishings and lucky for you we carry lots of Bina and Four Hands at Bliss, including this bed headboard and frame!

Created by renowned eco-conscious furniture designer of 16 years, Thomas Bina, the namesake brand employs Old World, hand-crafted techniques using solid, reclaimed South American hardwoods, black walnut, ironwood, brass and blackened steel. From the collage of patinas (a result of the various species of wood used) to the steel and hardware, the collection is abundant with a sense of history and timelessness. Because every piece is crafted by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike.

Bina dining tables, dressers and nightstands are all the result of refashioned, reclaimed materials, including telephone poles, old barns and demolished buildings (which can be 1,000 years old). In certain cases, Bina takes reclaimed woods and combines these pieces with new American hardwood to lend the results a range of colors and dimensions.

Bina doesn’t stop at wood; couches made from recycled and repurposed canvas taken from original army and truck tarps are another item that certainly come with a compelling story. Whatever the project, Thomas Bina has a knack for beautiful yet discarded objects, favoring them to anything he could purchase new off the shelf.

Bliss 101 Proudly Launches a Photography Exhibit from Local Surf Icon Rob Machado

On Saturday, May 5th from 6 to 9 p.m., we will be launching an exhibit of select photography from local surf icon and Cardiff native Rob Machado during a free event that is open to the community. Bliss 101 will be the first and only local gallery to offer the surfer’s photography, a collection of images from Machado’s worldwide travels as well as his life in Encinitas and Cardiff, for sale to the public.

During this event, a percentage of proceeds from sale of Machado’s photography and autographed t-shirts will benefit the Rob Machado Foundation. The Rob Machado Foundation’s primary mission is to provide funding and initiate educational programs focused on helping children understand their contribution towards a healthy earth. Locally, the Foundation supports various causes, including Cardiff SEA, a program of Cardiff Schools working toward enriching students’ educations through an array of green initiatives.

“I’ve been interested in photography for years, always taking photos on my surfing trips, but one of my favorite places to shoot is my hometown area in North County,” says Machado. “Because Bliss 101 supports local artists and the community, it’s a great fit to launch the exhibit of the images I’ve taken throughout the years.”

Machado will be present at Bliss 101 during the May 5th event to mingle with guests and personally autographed t-shirts and prints supporting the Foundation. The evening will include live music, food, drinks and face painters for kids, and Bliss 101’s own collection of locally sourced and reclaimed gifts and décor.

“We’ve wanted to showcase Rob Machado’s photography since we opened our doors in Encinitas over a year ago, so you can imagine how happy we are to be hosting this exhibit. Rob is an icon within the Encinitas community, committed to environmental philanthropy and giving back to his community – which is what we are all about,” says Helen Zeldes, owner of Bliss 101.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Bliss 101, located at 687 S. Coast Highway 101, Suite 151, Encinitas, CA 92024.

Colorful Ocean Artist Spencer Reynolds at Bliss 101

Brookings, Oregon is a small, coastal town that may not be at the top of every avid traveler’s must-see list, but to artist Spencer Reynolds, this area is the perfect setting to live and paint on a full time basis. From a young age, Reynold’s parents encouraged him to both paint and surf, setting the stage for what would become works of art with a noticeably Pacific Northwest and ocean-bound feel. Reynold’s original oil paintings were done on 95% recycled wood, and at first sight, appreciative viewers can immediately tell that that the man behind the marking is one seriously avid surfer. Reynolds has also said he tends toward using stunningly bright colors (certainly noticeable in nearly all of his works), as these colors serve to counteract Oregon’s rugged terrain, laden with clouds, rainfall and chilly water and air temperatures.  Originals and Giclee’s of Spender Reynold’s unique works are now on display at Bliss 101.

Bliss 101′s Menehune Christmas Party

Our Menehune Christmas Party was definitely one to remember.  We had some amazing Musubi (sticky rice with a protein (teri chicken, mahi mahi, tofu and SPAM), wrapped in seaweed), we had great music provided by Uncle Quintinn Holi and a special surprise guest Aja (pronounced Asia) as well as some Holiday Hula Dancing from the Motu Nehenehe Polynesian Dancers.  The kids in the audience even got a quick hula lesson!  If you missed this event, make sure you come to the next one.  We always have good fun here at Bliss 101.  Thank you to our sponsors:  Primo Island Lager, Hawaiian Springs Water, KIND Healthy Snacks, Whole Foods Encinitas and ILoveMusubi.com.
